MMANEWSLEAK Exclusive:

The Natural Bron Thiller: Carlos Condit

One thing is certain when Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit fights: It won’t be boring. Saturday night at UFC 120 in Great Britain, Carlos Condit further cemented his reputation as a welterweight contender with a stunning KO of mohawked hooligan handsmith, Dan Hardy.

Condit came to the UFC carrying a significant amount of ballyhoo thanks to his days as WEC champion but his UFC career got off to a rocky start with a split decision loss to boot-leather tough Martin Kampmann. Since that setback though, Condit has ripped off three straight wins with two of those being considered some of the best of the year.

Fans first starting hearing about Condit’s ability in 2006 during a ROTR (Rumble on the Rock) tournament style competition that had him fight Frank Trigg and Jake Shields in one night (he beat Trigg; lost to Shields).

Fans then got to follow Condit through the WEC including a tremendous showing against brawler Brock Larson and his explosive strength. Larson was a fairly large favorite and early in the fight took Condit down. Larson then did what he loves to do which is force his opponent up against the cage and commence pounding him senseless. However, Condit was able to secure an armbar and earn the submission.

Although Condit fought entertaining fights his entire career, his four fights since joining the UFC have all been utterly thrilling. Condit’s finishing skills might have been a little in question but no more after getting a TKO win Rory McDonald and starching Englishman Dan Hardy. Carlos Condit may never make people forget about Anderson Silva, but in regards to giving fights fans tremendous effort and extraordinarily enjoyable fights.

If you’re reading this you more than likely saw Condit KO Hardy, but do yourself a favor and watch his scraps with Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger as well. You’ll understand the title of the piece a little more clearly after you do.

MMANEWSLEAK Exclusive:

The Economics of being a UFC Fan

Name the last six UFC main events, go ahead I’ll wait.

Well, here they are: Silva v. Sonnen; Edgar v. Penn; Bisping v. Akiyama; Mir v. Cro Cop; Marquardt v. Palhares; Jones v. Matyushenko. In this order, it’s a credible card. But these are the MAIN EVENTS of the past six UFCs. It would cost just south of $165 to watch three of these events which were on pay-per-view.

Sometimes being a UFC fan feels like being an NFL fan and having to pay to watch the Chiefs v. Titans; Raiders v. Lions and Jaguars v. 49ers. None of us would do that; but somehow, we all open our wallets and spend almost half of a full day, to watch in six separate events that which would be barely interesting all on one card.

Even more concerning is that all six of these events occurred in a 77 day period. The three PPVs were held in a 49 day period. So in just a hair over our 30 day billing cycle, we had to fork over $165 to the UFC.

In 10 months of 2010, the UFC has held 19 events, of which 12 were PPV events, which cost a total of $659.88. Almost two-thirds of the UFC events in 2010 have been PPV. There will be four more PPVs in 2010, including the New Year ’s Day Edgar/Maynard tilt, costing a total of $879.84. Of the 16 PPV events, only nine had or will have title fights in the main event. The average American digital cable customer spends $75 a month on its cable television bill; a UFC fan spends the same amount.

The UFCs PPV goals are lofty. The UFC hopes to hold 100 events per year and host the first $100 PPV event, so don’t expect the cost of being a UFC fan to decrease any time soon. The days of the numbered UFC events being reserved for title fights are long gone.

The summer UFC line-up was less than stellar, yet the cost of being a UFC fan continues to increase as the UFC broadcasts more and more events. As the cost increases, the quality of the UFC programming decreases. At the current increase in the number of programs, we can soon expect to pay over $1,000 per year to watch UFC PPVs.

Add the cost of food, drinks and the other accouterments of hosting a UFC PPV party, and the costs of following the UFC can be staggering. Hopefully, the quality of the UFC programming will not continue to deteriorate at the same rate as the increase in the cost of watching that programming, because we can’t expect the cost of beer and pizza to decline any time soon.

MMANEWSLEAK Exclusive:

Fedor: The Last Emperor Becomes the Lost Emperor

Reports have Fedor claiming that everyone under the sun is avoiding fighting him. Verdum and Overeem are allegedly both avoiding him. Here are a couple of news flashes; Fedor doesn’t say those things, M-1 says those things. Fedor says very few things. M-1 President, Vadim Finkelstein, does all the talking. Here’s the other news flash, M-1 is Fedor’s biggest and most feared opponent.

In addition to the selection of opponents for Fedor, it is M-1’s desire not to trigger the Stikeforce “champion’s clause”, which would extend Fedor’s contract indefinitely. Fedor has only one fight remaining on his Strikeforce contract, but if he wins the heavyweight title, his contract is automatically extended. If he fights anyone in Strikeforce without renewing his contract, other than the Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Fedor burns the remaining fight on his contract and walks away as a free agent. M-1’s desire to obtain free agency and Strikeforce’s goal to keep Fedor in the fold, are hugely competing interests in an extremely complicated dance step.

The contract negotiations between Fedor and Strikeforce have many moving parts; but make no mistake, M-1 and Finkelstein have wasted Fedor’s career. Strikeforce appears to be gaining in popularity on the backs of several of its fighters. The breadth of its media coverage has exploded. Strikeforce was built on the backs of Kimbo Slice, Gina Carrano and Fedor. Kimbo and Gina are gone and Fedor’s light is dimming quickly as other Strikeforce athletes gain in prominence.

The reasons for Fedor’s decline have little to do with his submission loss to Verdum. Fedor’s rapid decline is due to two factors, both on the part of Finkelstein: ARROGANCE and IGNORANCE. Finkelstein has refused to hire American management to negotiate for Fedor. His demands have been ridiculous and unrealistic. M-1 is a fine international promoter, but it’s far from being a manager; in fact, as a manager, its demands to U.S. organizations would have never been tolerated in any of its’ productions.

M-1 and Finkelstein are notoriously difficult to work with. Affliction, EliteXC and Strikeforce have each experienced similar difficulty in dealing with M-1. The UFC has heard the stories and are not anxious to bite that bitter apple; it’s not Fedor, its Finkelstein and M-1. If you somehow get the Russians  to a fight, once they’re there, it’s a constant barrage of demands and babysitting. If the eggs are cold at the morning breakfast, Finkelstein takes it as a personal insult dished out by the promoter. Nothing is ever enough for him.

Finkelstein’s negotiations with the UFC have been a similar joke. Failing to recognize the difference between managing and promoting, it’s been widely reported that M-1 demands are to co-promote as a condition to joining the UFC. Nobody has ever blamed the UFC for refusing that demand. What has not been reported, is that Finkelstein is so concerned about being perceived as having sold Fedor to the UFC, that he’s actually asked for a position with the UFC, with a business card that he can take back to Russia to evidence the UFC/M-1 partnership.

We should really feel sorry for Fedor. He’s been a victim here. By all reports, M-1 takes good care of Fedor financially; but make no mistake, Fedor is merely a pawn to build the M-1 brand of promotion. The UFC has refused to take the bait, so Fedor’s career is being drained faster than an Edward Cullen bite victim.

The obstacles M-1 has placed on its negotiations with the UFC are ridiculous. Likewise, the UFC is not anxious to deal with the Russian entourage that follows Fedor. Two years ago, Finkelstein was holding a pair of pocket aces. Now, he’s got an unsuited deuce and a 3, and he’s trying to play hand as if he were still holding the pair of pocket aces. Finkelstein should either fold and let an American management take over or get out of the game and head back to Russia. Either way, Fedor’s light is dimming quickly.

Bring On The Hate: Diaz and Miller

Five rounds of brawling apparently wasn’t enough for Nick Diaz Saturday night in San Jose, CA. MMAnewsleak.com learned that after Diaz retained his Strikeforce welterweight belt in a highly entertaining dustup with KJ Noons, Diaz and Jason “Mayhem” Miller exchanged fighting words and had to be restrained by Strikeforce officials as they passed each other in the hallway following the press conference.

As you may remember, Diaz and Mayhem got their feud up and running when “Mayhem” interrupted Jake Shields’ post fight interview by asking him for another shot . Shields happens to be good friends and training partners with Nick and his brother Nate Diaz and this impromptu rematch request sparked an in-cage riot that almost brought CBS broadcaster Gus Johnson to tears.

Since the incident, Diaz and “Mayhem” have continued to tell anyone who will listen how much they dislike each other setting the stage for a real grudge match, not some promotion-contrived event. Diaz famously fought Joe “Diesel” Riggs in a hospital following their fight at UFC 57 and traded pre-fight insults with Frank Shamrock prior their April 2009 meeting.

Stay tuned as a struggling Strikeforce might try and cash in with this true rivalry sooner than later.

Is Koscheck Really As Dumb As He Looks ?

Josh Koscheck was one of the early de-pantsees for his critique of Georges St-Pierre’s year round physique as obvious evidence of steroid use; which he later retracted. Koscheck has continued his one-way feud on season 12 of the UFC reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”, where Koscheck is continually trying to match wits with St-Pierre.

In TUF episode two, St-Pierre completely outwitted Koscheck in his selection of fighters by using a “Trojan-Draft”. To anyone who saw the episode one preliminaries, predictably, both Koscheck and St-Pierre coveted the athletic Michael Johnson.
St-Pierre and his assistant trainers Greg Jackson, John Danaher and Brad Tate, devised a plan to give Team GSP the opportunity to select Johnson if Koscheck won the coin toss for the first pick. St-Pierre, et al., created a false draft sheet, listing former University of Buffalo wrestler Marc Stevens as St-Pierre’s top pick. Team GSP reasoned that Kosheck, a former UB assistant wrestling coach, might have a soft spot for Stevens. St-Pierre “carelessly” allowed Koscheck to see the false draft sheet, making Koscheck think Team GSP wanted Stevens. The plan worked and Koscheck took the bait. Koscheck drafted Stevens as the first pick, opening the door for St-Pierre to select Johnson. Moreover, St-Pierre, by virtue of losing the toss, was permitted to select the first bout. Which “Bruce LeRoy” won for Team GSP.

In episode three, St-Pierre, by virtue of Bruce LeRoy’s win, kept control of the selection of the fights between Team GSP and Team Koscheck. St-Pierre selected Johnson, who submitted Aaron Wilkinson, giving Team GSP a 2-0 lead in the series.

What Koscheck has not been able to do with his head, he’s attempting to do with his mouth. Throughout the episodes, it has become clear that Koscheck’s strategy for his upcoming fight with GSP is to try to get under St-Pierre’s skin. Koscheck is instituting a scheme befitting the nastiest political campaign. Koscheck is continually berating and antagonizing St-Pierre, culminating in Koscheck and a Team Koscheck teammate parking so close to St-Pierre’s car in the parking lot, St-Pierre could barely get in.

Koscheck’s sophomoric antics may make good television; but all subplots aside, TUF is a prelude to a real UFC title fight between Koscheck and St-Pierre. BJ Penn tried to get under St-Pierre’s skin, as did Dan Hardy. Both of whose trash-talking acumen far exceed Koscheck’s. Penn and Hardy only fueled St-Pierre’s inner fire. As St-Pierre explained as he squeezed into his pinned-in car, he just takes it in and dusts it off for motivation at the right time. That right time is December 11, when St-Pierre faces Koscheck for St-Pierre’s Welterweight title.

St-Pierre will hardly need additional motivation to beat up Koscheck in front of over 20,000 of his countrymen in Montreal. However, Koscheck has many weeks remaining in the show to fuel “St-Pierre’s fire”. Unfortunately for Koscheck, TUF 12 is already in the can, so there’s nothing Koscheck can do to reverse the devastation he’s bringing upon himself.

Koscheck, like many others, has proclaimed that he’s going to beat St-Pierre by standing up and striking with him. Likewise, he’s copycatting vanquished St-Pierre loudmouths by trying to get under St-Pierre’s skin. Maybe Koscheck should try something original for a change? It is said that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process and expecting a different result. By this logic, maybe Koscheck really is insane?
